In Metro Manila, the rise of ride-hailing services like Grab and Angkas has provided a much-needed lifeline in the chaos of daily commutes. These digital solutions have saved countless people in critical moments—whether it's rushing to a thesis defense or making it on time to an important meeting. In many ways, they’ve become indispensable, even a means of living for a certain demographic. But while these services might seem like a quick fix to Metro Manila’s transportation problems, the truth is far from ideal.

The problem lies in the cost, both literal and figurative, of these services. These ride-hailing apps are premium solutions, and while convenient, they are not accessible to everyone. They have been a lifesaver in the most desperate of situations, but the harsh reality is that most people simply cannot afford to use them as regularly as they like. For the average commuter, the cost of ride-hailing is unsustainable—what works in a pinch does not work as a daily solution.

Yes, digitalizing transportation is definitely the correct path forward, and services like Grab and Angkas have helped many. But we must face the fact that these services, in their current form, are bandaid remedies. They ease the pain temporarily, but they don’t address the core issue: the inefficiency of the overall transportation system in Metro Manila.

And here at Station PTOT, we think that the problem with ride-hailing services lies in their "point-to-point" feature—the convenience that allows people to be picked up from anywhere and dropped off exactly where they need to go is a dispensable feature is what we are trying to say. That on the surface, this feature sounds like the perfect solution, but it’s exactly this convenience that makes the model unsustainable. It’s luxurious, seamless, and comfortable, yes. But with convenience comes a hefty price tag that not everyone can bear, and that’s where the barrier lies.

The point-to-point nature of ride-hailing services limits scalability. These services offer a one-size-fits-all solution to a city with diverse needs, and as a result, they cater only to those who can afford it. The digitalization of transportation is truly the correct and natural progression of how things should work, but the digitalization of transportation that Grab, Angkas, and others need to evolve. It needs a revamp, an upgrade of sorts. Taking another look at the point-to-point convenience and feature these services might a step forward in doing so.

We argue that removing the convenience of the point-to-point feature of the current ride-hailing solutions is the correct step toward a more accessible digitalization of transportation. Periodt.
